The Aftermath:
After the horrors of World War II, it was decided that Germany was to be punished for its rebellion against the other Western forces. The wartime "big three" had already arranged for Germany to be split into four areas controlled respectively by the dominant Western countries which included the British, French, United States and Russia. In this way, the German military would be removed from any power or rule and the zones would be held by non-local government. In addition to this, the German war criminals were to be hunted down and pay reparations for their actions and appear in court. However, this was not the main focus of the Yalta conference. The paramount concern for Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin was the rebuilding of the nations destroyed in the war and how the world was to move forward from its broken state. This was the attitude that was adopted by the three leaders entering one of the most influential conferences in modern history... |
